During the NATO summit in Vilnius, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that his country would allocate $541 million Canadian dollars (or $410 million US dollars) for military assistance to Ukraine and "strengthening transatlantic security."
However, according to the press service of the Canadian government, the bulk of this amount - $450 million Canadian dollars - is intended for a contract with Thales Canada Inc. to support the operation of the Canadian Armed Forces' fleet of small combatants and auxiliary vessels for five years, with the possibility of extension to 19 years.
Additionally, $48.8 million Canadian dollars (or $37 million US dollars) will be allocated for the Comprehensive Assistance Package for Ukraine, which provides for the donation of materials such as fuel, bridge equipment, rations and first aid supplies. In April, Canada had already allocated $34.6 million in local dollars (or $26.2 million US) for this purpose.
Trudeau also announced an additional $2.7 million in Canadian dollars to support the Ukrainian government's efforts to counter cyber threats and cyber attacks. Thus, all of the new Canadian aid to Ukraine that has been announced amounts to approximately $39 million in non-lethal assistance.
At the NATO summit, Canada and other member states, including Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Norway, Romania, Turkey and the United Kingdom, signed a founding document for the establishment of a Center of Excellence for Climate and Security. The initiative is being founded by Canada, and the center will be located in Montreal.
"Canada will provide direct support and $40.4 million over five years, $7 million annually. The center will enable Canada, NATO Allies and other global partners to understand and address the serious security implications of climate change, including in the Arctic. Its activities will support NATO's Climate Change and Security Action Plan," the statement said.
