Russia offers cheap grain: EU urges countries not to fall under new dependencies

The European Union has expressed serious concern over the actions of Russia, which is trying to impose new economic dependencies on developing countries by offering cheap grain, exacerbating the food security situation and increasing global food insecurity.

In his letter, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, expressed serious concerns about Russia's actions and called on developing countries, along with the G20, to speak with one voice in demanding that Russia return to the Black Sea Grain Initiative and stop attacking Ukraine's agricultural infrastructure.

Borrell said that Russia's actions, which are trying to use cheap grain as a weapon to create new economic dependencies and deepen the economic vulnerability of developing countries, are cynical and unacceptable.

These actions of Russia can affect food security and give it a new dimension - a weapon to impose food dependence, Borrell emphasized.

The EU High Representative emphasized that the European Union tried to exclude any measures that would affect the food security of partner countries.

In this dangerous period, when the world is facing supply challenges and rising food prices, Russia's actions to use food as a tool to influence the economic situation in developing countries are of serious concern and require joint efforts of the international community to ensure sustainable and equitable food security.
