Romania plans to double transit capacity for Ukrainian grain

Romania is developing plans to significantly increase its transit capacity for Ukrainian grain from 2 to 4 million tons per month. This news became known after the statement of the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania, Sorin Grindeanu, published by the source "Evropeiska pravda", referring to the Agerpres agency.

After negotiations with representatives of the United States, the European Union, Moldova, Ukraine and Romania on alternative routes for transporting grain from Ukraine, Minister Grindeanu announced Romania's intention to increase the monthly capacity for grain transportation.

"In the context of the recent attacks on the Ukrainian ports of Reni and Izmail, we agree that the export of Ukrainian grain needs to be accelerated. We emphasized the importance of Romanian land, rail and sea transportation routes to maintain a continuous flow of exports and imports from Ukraine," Grindeanu said.

In particular, Grindeanu noted the importance of the Danube and the Sulia Canal as a viable waterway for transportation, so optimizing the capacity of this route is key.

The minister added that it is planned to reach almost 4 million tons of grain per month, which is a significant increase from the current 2 million tons. This achievement is planned thanks to measures that will increase the capacity of grain transit through Romania.

This initiative of Romania is gaining relevance in the context of the situation on the grain market after Russia's announcement in July to suspend the "grain deal" and threats against the parties considering the continuation of the initiative without Russia. In addition, there were reports of Russian shelling of the port infrastructure of Odesa and the Danube ports.

It is noted that Romania is taking active steps to find new routes for the transportation of Ukrainian grain, and these efforts are aimed at ensuring the sustainability of transit in the face of geopolitical changes in the regional market.
