Over the past three months, Ukraine has seen a sharp increase in the number of debtors. According to the open data platform Opendatabot, the number of debtors registered in the Unified Register of Debtors has increased by more than half a million people. This figure is almost equal to the total number of debtors recorded in the register from the beginning of the full-scale war until May 2023.

During this three-month period, the number of Ukrainians' debts in the register increased by 7%. This corresponds to more than half a million new debts.

For comparison, from the beginning of the full-scale war to May 2023, the number of entries in the Register increased by 8% in total. The entire year of 2021 showed an increase of almost 1.5 million debts, which amounted to 29%.

The main reasons for the increase in the number of debtors in 2023 are recoveries in favor of the state, fines for violating traffic rules and loan debts.

The largest increase was observed in the category of "Recovery in favor of the state" - +17%. This category has the largest number of debts, accounting for 22.5%.

The second most popular reason for Ukrainians to be included in the Register of Debtors is a traffic violation. Currently, 19.7% of the debts in the Register fall into this category. The third most common reason is the collection of credit debts, which account for 17.5% of the total number of debts of Ukrainians. Over the past year, the number of debts in this category has increased by 107 thousand records, or 7%. This is likely due to the lifting of the moratorium on debt collection for debts not exceeding UAH 100 thousand. Prior to that, the category of loan collection had been decreasing over the previous year.
