The National Bank of Ukraine has issued new commemorative coins with special designs and symbols to mark the country's Independence Day. The coins are called "Courage to be. UA" and are available in 5 and 10 hryvnia denominations.

NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyi noted that these coins are of a special nature, as such commemorative issues are usually timed to coincide with special events, prominent personalities, or objects of material culture. This time, however, a more abstract but symbolic theme was chosen - "courage".

The 10 hryvnia coin is made of 925 silver, weighing 31.1 grams, which corresponds to one troy ounce. It is also decorated with local gilding with a gold content of at least 0.00009 grams. The minting quality is defined as "special uncirculated" and the diameter is 38.6 mm.

The mintage of the silver coin is limited to 5000 pieces. The obverse of the coin depicts a symbolic composition that reflects Ukraine and its role in world history. The trident, which is kept "on the cutting edge" of time, symbolizes modern trends, social processes, and the world's attention to events in Ukraine. The small State Emblem of Ukraine is located at the top.

The reverse of the silver coin features a composition that symbolizes the courage and heroism of the Ukrainian people. The golden star, similar to the star of Bethlehem, symbolizes the new hope that, thanks to the determination and courage of Ukrainians, has destroyed the "stone-concrete" ideology of the invincibility of the Russian army, which has been instilled in the world by Russian propaganda for many years. The coin also bears the inscription: "COURAGE TO BE. UA".

The commemorative nickel-plated coin has a face value of 5 hryvnias and shares a design with the 10 hryvnia coin. Both coins emphasize the symbolism of the sword blade, which reflects the determination of the Ukrainian people to defend their independence with arms in hand.

The authors of the designs for these commemorative coins are Kyiv-based artists Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Haruk and Serhiy Haruk, and the sculptor is Volodymyr Atamanchuk.

Starting from August 24, 2023, these commemorative coins will be available for purchase in the NBU's online numismatic products store. A total of 1000 silver coins and 15,000 nickel silver coins will be available from the first day of sale.

Starting from September, these commemorative coins will also be available for customers at distributor banks, such as JSC JSB "UKRGASBANK", JSC JSB "RADABANK", JSC "TASKOMBANK" and JSC CB "PrivatBank", as soon as they are received by the NBU Mint. Additional information on the start of the sale and points of sale can be found on the official websites of these banks.
