Moldova has no debt to Gazprom - International auditors

An international audit has confirmed that Moldova has no debt to Russian gas giant Gazprom. This information refuted Gazprom's statements about the $800 million debt, which it claimed was to be repaid by the Moldovan authorities.

This was announced by Moldovan President Maia Sandu on Sunday, Yevropeiska Pravda reports citing Reuters.

Moldova used to receive Russian natural gas, but at the end of 2021, Gazprom and its Moldovan subsidiary said they had accrued a debt of hundreds of millions of dollars that had to be repaid to ensure further stable supplies.

At the beginning of last year, Gazprom estimated the debt at $709 million, but this amount could grow due to interest charges.

Sandu said during a public meeting that the audit results refuted these claims, although there was no concrete evidence of a smaller debt.

The Moldovan president said that the Chisinau government will release an official statement on the audit results in the coming days.

Moldova buys gas from other European sources

Since December 2021, the pro-Western government of Moldova has stopped buying gas from Gazprom and has established supplies from other European sources.
