Wind energy in Ukraine: The Ministry of Energy estimates the potential at 140 GW

Ukraine has a huge potential for the development of wind power generation, estimated at 140 gigawatts (GW), and foreign investment companies are already showing interest in this area, said Herman Galushchenko, head of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, in an interview with Ukrainian Radio.

After Russia's military aggression, Ukraine lost almost 80% of its wind generation capacity. Most of the wind farms are located in the south of the country, where there are suitable climatic conditions, especially in terms of wind speed. Unfortunately, this territory is now temporarily occupied, and almost all wind generation has been lost.

Despite the war, wind energy development continues. In 2023, a wind farm was launched in Mykolaiv region, adding 114 megawatts (MW) to the total capacity.

The Black Sea and Azov Sea shelves have the greatest potential for wind power development, but due to martial law, they cannot be used yet.

The Ministry of Energy already has many interested companies from all over the world that are ready to invest in Ukrainian wind energy. After the conflict is over, these companies plan to start their operations in Ukraine. The country's wind generation potential is estimated at about 140 GW of electricity.
