Decline in car imports to Ukraine: Overview and the most popular brands in 2023

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, imports of motor vehicles to Ukraine have significantly decreased, reaching the lowest levels in the last three years. In 2023, approximately 377 thousand vehicles were imported into the country, which is almost half as many as in 2021.

Kyiv, Lviv and Odesa regions became the leaders in terms of the number of imported vehicles. It should be noted that this drop in imports is defined as significant and is the lowest in the last three years.

Passenger cars are the most popular among imported cars, accounting for 73.7% of all vehicles. Motorcycles and trucks account for 10.1% and 9.7%, respectively.

The average age of imported vehicles in 2023 was 10 years. At the same time, imported cars were 2 years younger compared to 2022. According to analysts, more than 50% of cars imported in 2023 are 10 years old or older.

Gasoline cars remain the most popular among imported cars, accounting for 43%. Diesel cars account for 33% of all imported vehicles in 2023.

Most newly imported cars were registered in Kyiv (11.5%), as well as in Lviv (10%) and Odesa (7.6%) regions.

At the same time, the most popular car brands among those imported in 2023 were Volkswagen (13.1%), Renault (9.2%), Skoda, Nissan, and Audi. Among the models, Volkswagen Golf is the leader (3.2%), followed by Skoda Octavia, Renault Megane, Volkswagen Passat, and Renault Megane Scenic.

In general, the decline in vehicle imports to Ukraine indicates changes in the automotive industry and the prevalence of demand in the market.
