Khmelnytskyi NPP: Expansion and prospects

Construction of four new power units at Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is scheduled to begin this year, making it the most powerful in Europe. Two of these units will be constructed using the modern American AP1000 technology. This was announced by Ukraine's Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko, according to RBC-Ukraine.

Galushchenko noted that the construction of the third and fourth power units at Khmelnytsky NPP had been planned for a long time, and the third unit was already at a high level of readiness.

The minister sees this step as a compensation for the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP, noting that the issue of its return is only a matter of time and conditions.

With the commissioning of the new units, Khmelnytsky NPP will be the largest in Europe, even surpassing Zaporizhzhya NPP in terms of capacity.

The minister stressed that the construction of new reactors will take time, but the third power unit can be commissioned within about 2.5 years.

Galushchenko also emphasised Ukraine's close cooperation with the US company Westinghouse on the construction of the third and fourth power units using VVER-1000 technology, as well as the construction of two AR1000 reactors. The AR1000 technology, which has not yet been used in Ukraine or Europe, is an American reactor type and includes innovative approaches to safety, which makes it special and powerful.
