Changes in the structure of Ukraine's energy system to reduce damage from Russian missile strikes: what is proposed

Due to the constant attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, there is a need to revise the structure of the energy system. One of the options is to create a new component of the power system, which involves the development of a network of small generating stations that will be more difficult to attack due to their large number.

Such plans were announced by Andriy Gerus, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy, Housing and Utilities, Ukrainian Radio reports.

According to the MP, energy facilities are hardly classified now, so their storage is almost impossible.

"We are working on changes in the structure of the energy grid to increase the number of small, distributed, decentralized generating facilities that would be closer to the end consumer. Simply put, when we have 5-10 large power plants, they become easy targets for attacks. But if we have a hundred small power plants located close to consumers, it will be more difficult to attack them with missiles because of their large number or high costs," Gerus explained.

As part of these changes, many solar and gas power plants are already being installed, especially in urban areas.

Gerus noted that this new structure of the power system will help ensure its flexibility and reliability, providing a stable power supply for consumers.
