Germany increases purchases of Ukrainian rapeseed

Germany continues to increase the imports of rapeseed, according to the data of the German Association for the Promotion of Oil and Vegetable Protein (UFOP), in the first half of the season 2023/24 the amount of purchases amounted to about 3.5 million tons, which is up from 2.6 million tons in the previous season. Of this amount, approximately 2.2 million tons were imported from the European Union.

The largest volumes of rapeseed were imported from Romania (696.6 thousand tons), Poland (523.2 thousand tons) and France (303.9 thousand tons). However, Ukraine remains the most important supplier of rapeseed for Germany, with 995.6 thousand tons purchased, almost twice as much as in the previous season.

In addition, other traditional sources of rapeseed are Canada and Australia. During the reporting half of the season, supplies from Canada were not significant, while the volumes from Australia decreased to 165.8 thsd tonnes, which is significantly less than in the previous period.

At the end of the marketing year, Germany remained the largest importer of rapeseed in the European Union, with an average volume of 5.5 to 5.7 million tons. However, the export volume remains relatively small, as the country's oil mills process about 9.4 million tons of rapeseed. Germany exports mainly to other EU countries such as France, the Netherlands and Belgium.
