Prospects of the energy system: challenges and forecasts

Power shortages caused by the latest attacks on the power system by Russia will last for at least two years and will become a regular occurrence for the power system. Such a forecast was announced by Oleksandr Kharchenko, director of the Energy Research Center, during a briefing at the Ukrinform media center.

"In general, my forecast is that we will live with a shortage of electricity for the next two years. And this will simply be a normal state for the Ukrainian energy system," Kharchenko emphasized.

The expert noted that high-voltage power transmission networks are currently in much better condition than power plants. Therefore, the threat from energy transmission networks is less in the long run than from electricity production.

However, even if the power units damaged during the Russian attacks are restored, the capacity deficit will remain, according to Kharchenko.

The latest attacks on Ukraine's energy system demonstrate the need to strengthen measures to ensure cyber security in this area. These attacks should be seen as attempts to destabilize the country and affect its economy.

Government and expert circles should consider a wide range of measures to ensure the stability of the energy system in the face of cyber security threats. Only in this way will Ukraine be able to effectively respond to modern challenges in the energy sector.

The predicted two-year deficit of electricity became a clear signal for the implementation of strategic plans in the field of energy and the development of alternative energy sources.
