Cucumber market in Ukraine: prices are on the rise again due to reduced supply

After a temporary decrease in the prices of cucumbers last week, a new trend towards an increase in their value is observed in the Ukrainian market. According to analysts of the EastFruit project, prices for this vegetable have increased by a third.

The main reason for the increase in prices is a significant reduction in supply on the market. Practically all greenhouse complexes are currently cleaning before preparing for the second crop rotation, which has significantly reduced the volume of cucumber cultivation.

The number of cucumbers from summer greenhouses has also noticeably decreased due to the slowdown in harvesting due to adverse weather conditions.

As a result, the prices of greenhouse cucumbers increased by 30% compared to the previous week and are in the range of 30-50 hryvnias per kilogram ($0.74-1.23 per kilogram). Many producers have given up growing cucumbers of the second crop rotation or reduced the area under them in favor of other crops.

At the moment, prices for greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine are already 15% higher than last year in the same period. However, market participants warn about possible negative consequences of further price increases on consumer demand.

Market experts point out that such a sharp increase in prices can affect the ability of consumers to purchase cucumbers, which in the future can be reflected in sales volumes and profitability for producers. It is also expected that the price of cucumbers may continue to fluctuate depending on weather conditions and growing volumes in the coming weeks.
