Growth of onion prices in Ukraine: The first price increase since the beginning of the year

In Ukraine, for the first time since the beginning of July, an increase in onion prices has been recorded. This became possible due to the reduction of supply on the market caused by seasonal factors.

Analysts of the EastFruit project report that the main reason for the price increase is the reduction in the amount of onions available on the market. Today, producers sell onions at a price of UAH 10-16/kg ($0.24-0.39/kg), which is 15% higher than the average prices at the beginning of the current week.

According to market data, the price increase is due to the off-season. Many farmers have already completed the sale of old stocks of onions, and harvesting of later varieties has not yet begun in full. This creates a certain shortage, which leads to higher prices.

Despite the significant price increase, onions are currently 26% cheaper than at the end of July 2023. This indicates that the prices for this product still have not reached the level of last year.

Farmers consider this increase to be temporary and hope for a decrease in prices in the near future. They expect prices to begin to decline as soon as the supply of onions from local farms increases again.

Thus, the onion market is currently experiencing a period of price fluctuations due to seasonal changes in supply and demand.
