Ukraine plans to replace 2 million streetlights: how this will change the energy consumption of communities

Ukraine is preparing for a large-scale modernization of street lighting systems, which involves replacing about two million streetlights with energy-efficient counterparts. The initiative is aimed at significantly reducing electricity consumption in Ukrainian communities, which is especially relevant in the context of the energy crisis.

This was reported by Serhiy Sukhomlyn, head of the State Agency for Infrastructure Restoration and Development. According to him, more than 1,400 communities can participate in the project. Several of them have already submitted applications for modernization, and the number of those interested is expected to increase significantly.

"The project provides for significant electricity savings, which is critically important in modern conditions," Sukhomlyn emphasized. According to preliminary estimates, the new streetlights will not only reduce lighting costs, but also help communities direct the saved funds to other needs.

In addition to the modernization of lighting, the project also includes the installation of solar power plants at critical infrastructure facilities, including water supply systems. It is expected that this will allow about 70 facilities to reduce their dependence on centralized electricity supply, providing additional energy autonomy.

However, the financing of these initiatives remains an open question. The State Agency for Reconstruction has not yet disclosed details about the sources of funds for the project. It is likely that these will be both state resources and international support.

This program has the potential to become an important step towards Ukraine’s energy independence. The successful implementation of the project can serve as an example for other countries that also seek to optimize their energy resources and transition to sustainable development.
