Completing the construction of the third and fourth power units of the Khmelnytskyi NPP should become a priority for Ukraine. These facilities can provide the country with an additional 2.2 GW of cheap electricity, which will significantly strengthen energy security. Journalist Serhiy Lyamets is convinced that delaying the completion is a loss of a unique opportunity, writes UNIAN.
As of today, the third power unit is 80% ready, and the fourth is only 25%. However, even in the current war conditions, Ukraine has every chance to complete these projects, emphasizes Lyamets. In his article, he notes that the world is actively expanding nuclear energy, planning to add 750 GW of capacity by 2050. This global trend is a strong argument for Ukraine to join the development of nuclear power plants.
Separately, Lyamets draws attention to attempts to impose on Ukraine the use of exclusively alternative energy. According to him, investments in gas turbine, wind, solar and bio power plants do not solve the key problems of the energy system, because these capacities are maneuverable and produce expensive electricity. At the same time, nuclear power plants are able to provide stable, affordable and environmentally friendly energy in large volumes.
The journalist also recalls that nuclear power is a strategic direction of development for many countries. Ukraine, having significant experience in the operation of nuclear power plants, can effectively use this resource, especially in conditions of energy shortage due to military operations.
The completion of two units of the Kherson NPP is important not only from an economic but also geopolitical point of view. It will allow the country to reduce dependence on imported fuel and reduce the risks of energy crises.
"Waiting for the end of the war is a waste of time and opportunities. The power units at the Khmelnytskyi NPP are ready for completion, and this is a historic chance that Ukraine should not miss," concludes Lyamets. The completion of this large-scale project will be a significant step towards the country's energy independence and its integration into the European energy space.
