This year, the pace of installation of wind power plants (WPPs) in Ukraine has significantly decreased. According to the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association, in 2024 only 44.6 MW of new capacity was installed, while in 2023 this figure was 238 MW.
This situation was announced by the chairman of the board of the association Andriy Konechenkov in a comment to Ukrinform. He called 2024 a failure for the industry. "Compared to last year, when 238 MW of capacity were installed, this year we counted only two wind turbines of 5.5 MW and two turbines of 4.8 MW," Konechenkov noted.
In addition, used turbines that have undergone renovation are used in Ukraine. Thanks to this, in 2024, it was possible to install another 13 turbines with a total capacity of about 24 MW. Despite this, the overall results of wind energy lag significantly behind previous years.
According to Konechenkov, several key problems have become restraining factors for the development of the industry. Among them are significant debt in the electricity market, periodic non-fulfillment of government obligations to renewable energy producers, and the ineffectiveness of the market premium mechanism. These problems not only inhibit new projects, but also create risks for investments in the sector.
Experts indicate that a slowdown in the development of wind energy may affect Ukraine's fulfillment of international obligations to transition to renewable energy sources. Against the background of growing demand for clean energy in the world, Ukraine risks falling behind in the energy transformation.
To remedy the situation, experts urge the government to urgently take measures to stabilize the electricity market, ensure compliance with financial obligations, and improve legislation regulating the support of renewable energy sources. Without these steps, the development of wind energy in Ukraine may remain at a low level.
