Ukraine has expressed its readiness to provide Syria with food during the post-war reconstruction and the fall of the Bashar Assad regime. This was stated by the Minister of Agricultural Policy and Food of Ukraine Vitaly Koval in an interview with Reuters.

The Ukrainian government plans to occupy new niches in the food aid and trade market in the Middle East region. According to Koval, in a situation where the region is experiencing difficulties, Kyiv is ready to help with its agricultural products. “If Syria needs food, we are ready to supply it,” the minister stressed.

Ukraine’s statement became important against the backdrop of the cessation of wheat supplies from Russia to Syria, which was the main source of food imports for the Damascus government. According to reports, the supply was blocked due to political uncertainties and payment delays.

Previously, Ukraine exported food products to Middle Eastern countries, but cooperation with Syria was limited. In the 2023/24 marketing year, the country officially exported only 6,000 tons of corn to Syria, a tiny fraction of the total 29.4 million tons of corn exports.

Planning a new phase of relations with the post-treaty Damascus, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga declared Kyiv’s readiness to help rebuild Syrian society and strengthen diplomatic contacts. “We are ready to pave the way for new relations,” he concluded.
