ArcelorMittal, the world’s second-largest steelmaker, has announced the construction of a new state-of-the-art steel plant in Calvert, Alabama, to increase its production capacity to meet the needs of the US automotive sector. The project is a significant step for the company as demand for high-quality steel in the United States continues to grow.
According to information published by the company’s press service on February 6, 2025, the new plant will have the capacity to produce up to 150 kilotonnes of non-structural electrical steel (NOES) annually. This steel will be used in the automotive industry, in particular for the manufacture of large vehicles such as pickup trucks and SUVs.
The investment in the project is estimated at $900 million. Construction of the plant is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2025, with production scheduled to begin in 2027. The project is expected to create more than 1,300 jobs during construction and approximately 200 permanent jobs once the plant is operational.
John Brett, CEO of ArcelorMittal North America, stressed the importance of creating a stable and sustainable supply chain for this critical material. The company believes that demand for high-quality steel in the United States is increasing, while domestic supplies of this material remain limited, which poses new challenges for automakers.
The project is expected to help close the steel shortage for the US auto industry, especially for the production of light trucks and other large vehicles. According to Wards Intelligence, new car sales in the United States reached a five-year high in 2024, and automakers expect sales to remain strong in 2025.
With this project, ArcelorMittal will strengthen its position in the US steel market, while supporting the development of the country's auto industry and providing new job opportunities.
