Cold spring and stable demand caused a jump in prices for greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine

This week, the Ukrainian market has seen a significant increase in prices for greenhouse cucumbers. The main reason was the restriction of product supplies due to adverse weather conditions, which coincided with high and stable demand. According to analysts from the EastFruit project, the situation remains tense, and prices continue to show a growing trend.

According to market participants, greenhouse producers have revised their price lists upwards. The current price range for domestic cucumbers is 50–75 UAH per kilogram (equivalent to \.21–1.81), which is 17% higher than at the end of the previous working week. On average, compared to the same period last year, current prices have increased by a quarter.

The key factor limiting supply volumes is the unstable selection of products in greenhouses. Due to the cool spring and cloudy weather, farmers faced a delay in the ripening of cucumbers, which made it impossible to form full-fledged batches for sale on the market.

At the same time, the demand for cucumbers remains consistently high. Consumers are actively buying these products, which further stimulates the growth of prices. The situation was also affected by a decrease in the volume of imported cucumber supplies, in particular from traditional markets for Ukraine, which allowed domestic producers to set higher selling prices.

Another factor was weakened competition among Ukrainian producers. Unlike last year, when greenhouse products were already massively entering the market in May, this season weather conditions have significantly affected the rhythm of harvesting. Because of this, fewer products of Ukrainian origin are currently presented on supermarket shelves and markets.

As experts predict, only the improvement of weather conditions and the intensification of the harvesting of the new crop can lead to stabilization of the market situation. However, in the near future, we should expect high prices for greenhouse cucumbers to remain high, at least until mid-May.
