US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing new tariffs on wood and wood products, including kitchen cabinets and upholstered furniture. The tariffs will take effect on October 14, 2025, CNN reports.
According to the executive order, the US will impose a 10% tariff on imported wood used in the production of construction materials. In addition, a 25% tariff has been imposed on kitchen cabinets, dressing tables and upholstered furniture. As of January 1, 2026, the tariffs will increase: cabinets will be taxed at a rate of 50%, and upholstered furniture - 30%.
According to Donald Trump, such measures are designed to support the American woodworking industry and create new jobs. The president emphasized that the US has enough of its own forest resources to meet domestic needs for wood and furniture.
At the same time, experts warn that the new tariffs could increase the cost of housing construction and furnishing, which have already risen significantly in recent months. This could affect the residential real estate market and furniture manufacturers that rely on imported materials.
It should be noted that lumber is a key component of the US construction industry, and the country imports about 30% of its softwood lumber from Canada annually. At the same time, Canadian lumber imports are already subject to countervailing and anti-dumping duties of 14.5%.
The introduction of new tariffs could change the logistics of supply and pricing in the building materials market, which will make American manufacturers more protected, but potentially increase consumer costs. Analysts predict that this decision will have broad economic consequences, in particular for the US housing construction and furniture industries.
