India and China will resume direct flights in October 2025 after a five-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic and heightened political tensions between the countries.
According to the CTS, the first resumed flight will be operated by Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo. Starting October 26, daily flights will connect Kolkata in eastern India and Guangzhou in southern China. Other routes, including Delhi-Guangzhou, will be launched after receiving relevant regulatory approvals and availability of slots.
Direct flights between the countries were suspended in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After the easing of restrictions, the resumption did not take place due to political tensions, including border disputes and the deterioration of bilateral relations.
During these years, passengers were forced to fly via third countries such as Singapore, Bangkok or Hong Kong. This has significantly increased travel times and increased travel costs. Resumption of direct flights will reduce flight times and potentially lower airfares.
Airlines say that flights are currently being resumed in a phased manner. Both sides will closely monitor aircraft occupancy and demand for routes before expanding air services further.
Experts believe that the resumption of direct flights will positively impact business and tourism travel between India and China, simplifying logistics and reducing transportation costs for passengers and companies.
