Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán met with US President Donald Trump at the White House, during which an agreement was reached on a one-year waiver for Hungary from US sanctions on oil and gas imports from Russia. The decision was made after Orbán explained the need to use Russian fuel to ensure the stable operation of the Hungarian economy.
Last month, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on Russian oil companies Lukoil and Rosneft, which made it difficult for third countries to supply Russian oil. Orbán stressed that restrictions on energy supplies would seriously affect Hungary’s economic situation and the lives of its people.
To obtain a waiver from secondary sanctions, Orbán promised to purchase about $600 million worth of US liquefied natural gas (LNG) and nuclear fuel. In addition, the United States will allow fuel for Hungary’s Paks II nuclear power plant, a strategic energy project for the country.
President Trump praised Orbán’s stance on immigration policy and called the Hungarian prime minister “a great leader.” He also supported Orbán’s initiatives to resume plans for a summit with Vladimir Putin, which Orbán believes could help end the war in Ukraine.
In turn, Orbán praised Trump for his policies and sharply criticized the Biden administration, calling its actions “rigged.” He emphasized “a new chapter in the U.S.-Hungary bilateral relationship” and a “golden age of cooperation” between the countries.
In addition to energy issues, the leaders discussed migration policy and Hungary’s role in Europe during the meeting. Orbán also reiterated his criticism of EU sanctions against Hungary, emphasizing the need for a flexible approach to the country's energy security and economic development.
