Ukraine has agreed with the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) on a decision to increase the electricity import limit from 2.1 to 2.3 GW, Ukrenergo CEO Vitaliy Zaichenko told a briefing in Ukrinform. The new level of capacity will come into effect in December, which will significantly strengthen the stability of the Ukrainian power system during the heating season.
“An agreement has already been reached with European system operators to increase the available import volume to 2,300 megawatts for next month,” Zaichenko said. According to him, this decision is the result of technical consultations and constant coordination between Ukrainian and European network operators.
Despite the formal increase in the limit, Ukraine cannot currently fully use the available 2.1 GW due to technical limitations in the power system. As the head of Ukrenergo explained, energy companies are actively working to eliminate bottlenecks in internal networks that prevent the most efficient use of permitted volumes. It is expected that after a number of technical works in November, imported capacities will be more fully utilized.
Imports of electricity from EU countries play a key role in stabilizing the Ukrainian energy market, especially in the context of regular shelling of critical infrastructure. As Zaichenko noted, supplies from Europe help avoid emergency shutdowns and ensure uninterrupted power supply for business and industry, which is critically important for the economy in the winter period.
Currently, imports are carried out in the volumes necessary to balance the system, primarily for the needs of industrial enterprises that would risk facing capacity restrictions. Thanks to international support, Ukrainian energy companies have the opportunity to flexibly respond to peak loads and compensate for the lack of their own production.
The increase in permitted import capacity from 2.1 to 2.3 GW will be the highest since the start of the full-scale war. This indicates further deepening of Ukraine's integration into the European energy space and confidence on the part of ENTSO-E in the ability of the Ukrainian system to operate stably in synchronous mode with the EU grid.
