From March 2, 2026, Ukraine will officially stop circulating banknotes in denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 10 UAH of 2003–2007. They will be replaced by the corresponding circulation coins, the National Bank of Ukraine reports.
From this date, banknotes of the indicated denominations are no longer considered a means of payment. They are not subject to acceptance in retail chains, service enterprises, banks and other financial institutions for payments for goods, services or any payment transactions.
The National Bank emphasizes that Ukrainians will have enough time to exchange old banknotes for coins or other banknotes in circulation. Exchange is possible without restrictions and without additional fees:
in all branches of banks in Ukraine - within a year from the date of withdrawal of banknotes, i.e. until February 26, 2027 inclusive;
in authorized banks (JSC "Oschadbank", JSC CB "PrivatBank", JSC "Raiffeisen Bank", JSC "FUIB") - for three years, until February 28, 2029 inclusive;
in the National Bank of Ukraine - currently indefinitely.
The regulator notes that banknotes of 1, 2, 5 and 10 hryvnias have long been almost not used in retail trade: citizens practically do not pay with them, and their average shelf life is about 2.5 years. That is, most of these banknotes are already worn out and unfit for circulation.
The process of gradual withdrawal of these banknotes began almost six years ago and was carried out through Ukrainian banks, authorized financial institutions and the National Bank. The transition to coins will reduce the costs of producing cash and make the circulation of small denominations more convenient and durable.
Thus, Ukrainians should exchange their remaining old banknotes in advance to avoid inconvenience in calculations and ensure their continuous replacement with new circulating coins.
