A clear transformation of the car market is observed in Ukraine: demand for diesel cars is rapidly decreasing, while electric cars and hybrids are actively gaining popularity. These trends are manifested immediately in all key segments - among new cars, imported cars and domestic resales.
The Institute for Car Market Research reports on such changes, emphasizing that the market is going through a stage of large-scale electrification. In particular, Ukrainians are increasingly abandoning traditional "heavy" fuel in favor of modern alternatives.
The most noticeable drop in the share of diesel cars was recorded in the domestic secondary market. Here the indicator decreased by 2.6 percentage points and now stands at 27.6%. Analysts explain this dynamics by economic factors: with diesel fuel prices at UAH 86 per liter, maintaining a used car becomes too expensive for the middle class.
Against this background, electric cars are showing a sharp increase in popularity. Their share in the secondary market increased by 3.1 percentage points and reached 6.5%. At the same time, gasoline cars remain the leaders of the segment, maintaining a stable share at 42.7%, without significant changes.
Similar trends are observed in the segment of imported cars. Diesel cars lost 1.1 percentage points, falling to 22.5%, and gasoline cars reduced their share by 2 pp. to 57.2%. In contrast, electric cars are showing confident growth: their share jumped to 8.9%, adding 3.2 percentage points at once.
The most radical changes are taking place in the new car market. It is here that diesel has experienced the largest drop — minus 3.5 percentage points, to 22.1%. This is the deepest reduction among all segments, indicating a systematic departure from this type of fuel.
The main beneficiaries of the new trend were hybrid cars. Their share increased to 32%, adding 1.3 percentage points. Gasoline cars also showed a slight increase - to 41.9% (+1.6 pp), but this was mainly due to the flow of buyers from diesel versions of popular crossovers.
In general, the Ukrainian car market is quickly adapting to new economic realities and global trends. The high cost of fuel, changing consumer preferences and the development of electric vehicles are forming a new demand structure, where traditional diesel cars are gradually losing their dominant role.
