On the morning of April 14, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) lost external power supply again. This is the thirteenth case since the start of the full-scale war when the largest nuclear power plant in Europe has been completely disconnected from the power grid, which poses serious risks to nuclear safety.
The situation was reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which continues to monitor the condition of the facility. According to them, the loss of external power supply is one of the most dangerous scenarios for a nuclear power plant, as it complicates the maintenance of reactor cooling systems.
After the power outage, emergency diesel generators were quickly deployed at the plant. They provide power to critical systems necessary for maintaining safety, in particular, cooling the reactors and maintaining a stable state of nuclear fuel.
The IAEA emphasizes that the use of backup energy sources is a temporary solution that cannot completely replace a stable external power supply. The long-term operation of diesel generators is associated with additional risks, in particular, dependence on fuel reserves and the technical condition of the equipment.
In parallel, international experts continue negotiations with both sides of the conflict on the establishment of a local ceasefire. This initiative is aimed at creating safe conditions for carrying out repair work on another power transmission line that supplies power to the plant.
The department emphasizes that the restoration of reliable power supply is a key factor in ensuring nuclear safety at the ZNPP. The situation around the plant remains tense, and any disruptions to the power supply increase the risks of a man-made disaster.
