The US Justice Department is preparing to sue Google to sell its popular Chrome browser. This decision is part of an antitrust case against the company, which is accused of illegally monopolizing the online search market. The corresponding message was published by Bloomberg, citing its own sources.
According to information, the prosecutor's office intends to submit its proposals to the federal judge of the District of Columbia Amit Mehta on November 20. Antitrust authorities claim that the Chrome browser is the main platform for using Google's search engine, which allows the company to monopolize the search services market.
According to the web traffic analysis service StatCounter, the Chrome browser is the most popular in the world. In the US, it accounts for 61% of the market, which confirms its dominance in the Internet space. The Justice Department believes that selling Chrome would help reduce Google's dominance in the online search market and provide more competition.
However, the US authorities have abandoned a tougher scenario that would have required it to sell its Android mobile operating system. However, the Justice Department plans to ask Google to separate Android from its other products, including its search engine and Google Play app store. This, according to antitrust authorities, will reduce the opportunities for monopolization of the market.
In addition, the Justice Department intends to recommend that Google license its search results and data, as well as give websites more control over how the company's artificial intelligence uses their content. These requirements were part of the initial list submitted in October this year.
Google's vice president of regulatory affairs Leigh-Ann Mulholland responded to the Justice Department's statements, saying that the government is "exceeding its authority." According to her, the proposed measures could harm consumers, developers, and overall US technological leadership at a time when the country needs support for innovative companies the most.
