Oil and gas company MOL announced the discovery of a new oil field near Somogysámson, in western Hungary. This significant development was an important step towards reducing the country’s energy dependence on imported oil, confirming the potential of the Hungarian oil and gas sector.
Drilling of the new well, called Som-8, in the Somogysámson field began on November 25, 2024, and was successfully completed on Christmas Day of the same year. According to the company, oil was discovered at a depth of 1,250 meters.
The well is expected to produce 1,200 barrels of oil per day. This oil will be transported by tankers to the Danube Refinery in Sázsálombatt, which will contribute to the further development of the oil refining industry in the region.
The discovery of the new field is considered by the company as "clear evidence" of Hungary's potential in hydrocarbon production. In addition, MOL's existing oil fields in Vycség and Túr, as well as gas fields in the east of the country, have reached a five-year high in domestic production.
MOL plans to invest significantly in the exploration and production of oil and gas in Hungary. Over the next five years, the company plans to invest approximately HUF 150 billion in these strategic areas, which demonstrates its ambition and commitment to innovative development of the country's energy sector.
This discovery opens up new prospects for Hungary's economic growth by increasing its own energy production and reducing its dependence on foreign oil supplies.
