Tomato prices in Ukraine have fallen sharply since this week. Greenhouse producers are offering tomatoes for UAH 20-32/kg ($0.55-0.88/kg), 30% cheaper than at the end of the last business week.
The main reason for the price drop is the significant increase in the number of open-field tomatoes on the market. Despite the fact that the open-field tomato season has just begun, producers are reporting high yields of these products.
According to analysts, the decline in demand is leading to increased competition among tomato producers, which is further contributing to the price collapse.
The current price of greenhouse tomatoes in Ukraine is already 34% lower than at the beginning of August 2022.
Key market players are convinced that the decline in greenhouse tomato prices will continue and accelerate with the growing supply of these products from the open field.
Thus, the decline in tomato prices in Ukraine is due to the huge supply of tomatoes from the open field, increased competition and a decline in demand. Forecasts show that this downward trend in prices may continue in the future, which pleases consumers, but poses a challenge for producers.
