The largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine, Zaporizhzhya NPP (ZNPP), is under the threat of a new radiation accident as the six-year period of nuclear fuel permitted by the manufacturer in all six reactors installed at VVER-1000 power units on the temporarily occupied territory is approaching.
The National Nuclear Energy Generating Company Energoatom has expressed serious concerns about the possible consequences that may arise if the fuel is used beyond the established timeframe. According to the interim head of the company, Petro Kotin, further use of this fuel could lead to the destruction of the integrity of the fuel elements and a radiation accident.
Risks are also increased by the irresponsible activities of the Russian occupiers, who are constantly switching ZNPP power units from "cold shutdown" to "hot shutdown". These actions of the Russian invaders cause serious concerns among Ukrainian power engineers and contribute to the violation of SNRIU licenses, and therefore the terms of national and international legislation.
"Ukraine needs to immediately address this issue and take effective measures to ensure safety at Zaporizhzhya NPP, excluding any unlawful interference and violation of license conditions," emphasized Peter Kotin. The Ukrainian authorities must defend their rights and guarantee the safety of the national nuclear potential.
