Experts from the Institute for Automotive Research (IDA) conducted a large-scale analysis of car sales ads on the Ukrainian market. The study included a study of the twenty cheapest passenger car models that are most popular among Ukrainian buyers. The study took into account the average age and cost of models, each of which appeared in ads at least 3 thousand times.
According to the results of the analysis, the market for affordable cars in Ukraine largely consists of old models of Soviet and early post-Soviet production. The rating also included inexpensive foreign cars from the 80s and 90s, which have proven themselves to be reliable and cost-effective.
The average age of the cheapest cars exceeds 20 years, and some models have even been in operation for more than 40 years. For example, Soviet "Zhiguli" (VAZ 2101, VAZ 2103) are the oldest cars on the list. The average age of these models is over 40 years.
Despite their considerable age, these cars remain popular due to their low price. The cost of such cars starts from $500–600, which is comparable to the cost of a modern smartphone. For example:
- VAZ 2101: average age 43.7 years, average price $500;
- VAZ 2103: average age 43.5 years, average price $600;
- VAZ 2105: average age 35.3 years, average price $617.
The main advantages of these cars are simple design, availability of spare parts and cheap maintenance. However, they also have disadvantages: low safety level, high fuel consumption and outdated technical characteristics.
The rating also includes budget models of foreign production, which attract Ukrainians with their reliability. For example, the Opel Kadett and Ford Sierra, with an average price of $850–870, have become popular options for those looking for an affordable car. The youngest model on the list is the Chery Amulet, which has an average age of 16.5 years and costs about $1,700.
Thus, the Ukrainian used car market offers a lot of options for those looking for a budget solution. Although most models are inferior to modern cars in terms of comfort and safety, they remain affordable and functional for many Ukrainians.
