JSC "Ukrzaliznytsia" has begun a large-scale modernization of diesel locomotives of the TEP70 series, which were produced in 1985-1989. The work is being carried out at the company's own production facilities, which allows reducing dependence on the supply of new locomotives and restoring the operation of the existing fleet.
The first diesel locomotive of this series underwent major repairs at the end of last year. Preparation for the restoration and the process itself lasted more than four months. During this time, Ukrzaliznytsia specialists have mastered the implementation of complex repair operations, as well as developed spare parts that are not freely available on the market.
Special attention was paid to the restoration of key components of the diesel locomotive. In particular, the bogies, brake lever transmission, compressor, traction electric motor, central air system and other important elements were repaired. As part of the work, railway workers manufactured a muffler for a diesel engine, brake transmission rods, specialized tools for disassembling and assembling components, which significantly accelerated the modernization process.
Special attention was paid to the working conditions of drivers. The updated diesel locomotives take into account modern ergonomic standards, which will make operation more comfortable for locomotive crews.
Ukrzaliznytsia emphasizes that in wartime, each shelling of energy infrastructure forces the company to quickly put diesel locomotives into operation to replace electric locomotives. Due to the inability to quickly purchase new locomotives, the company is focusing on restoring rolling stock that is still subject to repair.
This initiative not only helps to solve current logistical challenges, but also demonstrates Ukrzaliznytsia's ability to adapt to difficult conditions, develop its own technological capabilities, and effectively use available resources.
