Ukraine and the European Union are working to create a single logistics space that will ensure the unhindered movement of goods and services between the countries. This initiative involves a comprehensive modernization of transport and customs infrastructure, as well as increased integration with the European market.
This was stated by the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, emphasizing the importance of simplifying logistics procedures. One of the key areas is the so-called "transport visa-free" with the EU, thanks to which Ukrainian carriers no longer need to obtain separate permits to work in the European Union countries. The government seeks to make this mechanism permanent, which will significantly simplify export operations and support the country's economy.
As of the beginning of 2024, the EU remains Ukraine's main trading partner - about 60% of Ukrainian exports are directed to the European Union countries. In January of this year alone, the volume of supplies to Europe reached $ 1.8 billion. In view of this, the development of effective logistics routes is a strategically important task for the state.
Another important area of cooperation is the modernization of border infrastructure. According to the government's plan, 29 existing checkpoints will be upgraded and 17 new ones will be built by 2030. This work will be carried out in cooperation with neighboring countries, which will help speed up border procedures and reduce queues.
Active preparations are also underway to launch joint customs and border control on the western border of Ukraine. It is expected that the first pilot project in this direction will be operational this year on the Ukrainian-Polish border. Negotiations are currently underway with the European Commission to finalize all details.
Additionally, Ukraine continues to develop the maritime corridor, which has already allowed the transport of over 100 million tons of cargo to 53 countries around the world. At the same time, some projects to modernize checkpoints are currently frozen due to the cessation of funding from USAID. The government is negotiating with the European Investment Bank to attract alternative financing, in particular, this topic was discussed during a telephone conversation between Denys Shmyhal and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
