The total direct damage to Ukraine’s infrastructure from Russia’s full-scale invasion has reached $170 billion. This is a serious burden on the country’s economy, and compared to the beginning of 2024, the damage has increased by $12.6 billion due to numerous missile strikes and active hostilities. The Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) published this information in its report.
The greatest destruction was suffered by the housing sector, transport infrastructure and energy, which significantly affect the daily lives of citizens and the functioning of the economy. In particular, the housing sector suffered the most, with losses amounting to $60 billion. During the war, 236 thousand buildings were damaged or destroyed, including 209 thousand private houses, 27 thousand apartment buildings, and 600 dormitories.
The greatest destruction of residential infrastructure is observed in Donetsk, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Kherson regions, where the fighting is most intense. This further complicates recovery and causes significant social and economic problems.
The loss of transport infrastructure is estimated at $38.5 billion. In particular, more than 26 thousand kilometers of roads were damaged or destroyed for $28.3 billion. Railway infrastructure suffered losses of $4.3 billion, and ports and aviation suffered losses of $850 million and $2 billion, respectively. In addition, more than 260 thousand cars were destroyed or damaged, which also led to significant economic losses.
The energy sector suffered losses of $ 14.6 billion, in particular due to the complete destruction of the Kakhovka and Dniprovska hydroelectric power plants, as well as the Trypilska and Zmiivska thermal power plants. In addition, high-voltage substations and other important energy infrastructure facilities were damaged, which makes it difficult to ensure a stable energy supply.
Total losses in the industry, construction and service sectors amount to $ 14.4 billion, as about 500 large and medium-sized enterprises were seriously damaged or destroyed. This has a negative impact on production capacities and the economy of the country as a whole.
The agro-industrial complex also suffered significant losses - losses are estimated at $ 10.3 billion. The main damage included the loss of over 130,000 units of agricultural machinery, damage to 4 million tons of grain storage facilities, and 16,000 hectares of perennial crops. At the same time, the forest fund suffered $4.5 billion, as 298,000 hectares of forests were damaged due to fighting and fires.
The educational infrastructure also suffered serious losses worth $7.3 billion. More than 4,000 educational institutions were damaged, including 229 schools, 110 kindergartens, and 97 universities, making the learning process difficult for millions of children and students.
The medical sector suffered losses of $4.3 billion, as 1,554 medical facilities were damaged, including 515 hospitals and 465 outpatient clinics, which negatively affected the healthcare system in Ukraine.
Rebuilding the country after such large-scale destruction requires huge investments and international support. However, even in such difficult conditions, Ukraine continues to work on restoring its infrastructure, hoping for stability and progress in the future.
