In February 2025, Ukraine significantly increased its natural gas imports, reaching a record 511.8 million cubic meters per month, the highest figure in the past year and a half. This growth is 12 times compared to the previous month, as confirmed by ExPro data.
The largest part of the imported gas — 234.4 million cubic meters or 45.8% — was purchased from Slovakia. 218 million cubic meters (42.6%) were imported from Hungary, and 59.5 million cubic meters (11.6%) from Poland.
In general, most of the gas was sent to the "bonded warehouse" of Ukrainian underground storage facilities — 401 million cubic meters. Another 110.8 million cubic meters were imported directly to the Ukrainian gas transportation system.
According to expert analysis, the significant increase in gas imports in February is the result of several factors, in particular, a decrease in Ukraine's own production after hostile actions by Russia and adverse weather conditions.
A moderate decrease in import volumes is expected in March, as weather conditions in Ukraine are expected to improve, which will lead to lower demand for gas. In addition, the country is gradually restoring its gas production facilities after damage from hostile attacks.
Despite the difficult conditions, Naftogaz and other importers say that the situation with gas supplies in the country is under control and not critical, although it requires constant attention and regulation.
