In March 2025, Ukraine increased electricity imports by 11% compared to February, reaching 272 thousand MWh. According to ExPro Electricity monitoring data, in February this figure was 244 thousand MWh.
According to expert calculations, the largest volume of electricity was imported from Hungary - 42% of the total volume. Among other countries from which electricity came, the largest supply was from Slovakia (19%), Poland (18%), Romania (16%), and the rest of the imports were from Moldova.
Despite the increase in imports from all directions, except Slovakia, compared to March 2024, electricity imports decreased by 40%. This indicates a stabilization of the situation on the energy market, although the level of imports remains high due to the need for additional volumes of electricity.
Simultaneously with imports, Ukraine doubled its electricity exports in March 2025, reaching 76.3 thousand MWh. This significant growth was made possible by the increase in electricity production at solar power plants, which produce energy mainly during the daytime, which leads to a surplus in the energy system.
Due to this surplus, in certain periods, energy system operators had to apply generation restrictions to avoid overloads and stabilize the energy balance.
In February 2025, a significant increase in electricity imports was also recorded - by 30%, compared to January, which also indicates a trend towards an increase in the need for energy resources in Ukraine in the context of the transition to more energy-intensive energy sources and increased consumption.
