Ukrzaliznytsia JSC has announced a large-scale project aimed at connecting all regional centers of Ukraine with high-speed Intercity trains. This was stated by the chairman of the company's board, Oleksandr Pertsovsky, in a comment to Rail.insider.
According to Pertsovsky, the company seeks to create regular and convenient connections between key cities of the country, in particular, such as Lviv, where, according to the plan, the Intercity should run every two hours. Such a model will significantly increase the mobility of citizens and make the railway a more attractive way of transportation.
He noted that after the start of Russia's full-scale aggression, Ukrzaliznytsia has already significantly expanded its high-speed network, and in conditions of constant need for evacuation, logistics and domestic travel, passenger traffic was growing rapidly. This gave impetus to the introduction of a new strategy - dynamic use of rolling stock without long downtimes.
“We are guided by the Ryanair model: our trains are constantly in motion. If earlier the car transported approximately 5–6 thousand passengers per year, now we have reached the figure of 10–11 thousand. This indicates a much more efficient use of the resource,” the head of UZ emphasized.
He gave the example of the Kharkiv-Kyiv flight, which previously stopped overnight in the capital. Now the route continues further - from Kyiv to Lviv, and then returns again. Thus, Ukrzaliznytsia significantly increases the number of passengers transported in one day.
However, the implementation of the ambitious plan requires new investments in rolling stock. Pertsovsky admitted that the company urgently needs additional trains to expand the route network. Despite this, the UZ management is resolute and sees the development of Intercity as the key to the modernization of Ukrainian railway transport.
