Latvian airline AirBaltic has already developed a plan to resume flights to Ukraine and is ready to return to the Ukrainian market as soon as the situation becomes safe. The company's CEO Martin Gaus shared in an interview with Bloomberg that AirBaltic has a clear plan in case Ukrainian airspace is reopened.
According to Gaus, the airline is ready to resume flights to Ukraine as soon as possible. After the airspace is opened, AirBaltic plans to reallocate its resources, directing them to Ukrainian destinations when it becomes safe. The company is also considering the possibility of leaving some of its aircraft in Ukraine overnight, a popular practice known as overnight stopover.
Gaus stressed that AirBaltic is ready to resume flights even "tonight", if security conditions allow. The opening of Ukrainian airspace and airports will create an opportunity for the company to work in a new key market, as the demand for travel to Ukraine remains high.
In addition, returning to the Ukrainian market will allow AirBaltic to significantly reduce flight times to southern countries. For example, the company's aircraft will be able to cross Ukrainian airspace, which will allow for more direct routes to popular destinations such as Dubai and Greece.
Despite the readiness to resume flights, the airline notes that this plan is not included in the official recommendations, since at this point it is not possible to predict exactly when Ukraine will open its airspace to international air carriers.
Therefore, AirBaltic aims to remain flexible and ready to resume flights to the Ukrainian market at any time when it becomes possible and safe.
