Switzerland has decided to join the 15th package of European Union sanctions against Russia and introduce new restrictions on Belarus. This decision was made against the backdrop of Russia's ongoing military aggression against Ukraine and the strengthening of the regime in Belarus, the Swiss government press service reported.
According to an official government statement, the new sanctions will enter into force on December 24, 2024. These restrictions are part of the response to the situation in Ukraine and Belarus, which requires additional measures from the international community. The Swiss authorities emphasized that the country continues its policy of supporting peace and stability, actively joining the sanctions aimed at punishing the aggressor.
One of the main innovations is the ban on entry and transit through Switzerland for persons subject to sanctions. This applies to both Russian and Belarusian citizens who have been found to be involved in actions that threaten the international order. Switzerland has also agreed to apply individual financial sanctions similar to those imposed by the EU against Belarusian individuals associated with the Lukashenko regime.
In addition, the sanctions include restrictions on doing business and providing financial services to certain companies and individuals from Russia and Belarus. The changes in sanctions policy reflect Switzerland's desire to actively contribute to international security while ensuring compliance with legal and ethical norms at the global level.
Although not a member of the EU, Switzerland has repeatedly supported the European Union's sanctions measures, confirming its commitment to international obligations and stability in Europe. Joining the 15th sanctions package is another step in this direction.
The Swiss government noted that, despite the country's neutral status, it has a duty to respond to aggression and violations of international law, especially in the context of the tragedy in Ukraine and the destabilization of the situation in Belarus.
