In 2024, Ukrainian drivers concluded over 1.4 million international insurance contracts "Green Card". Although this number is 8.35% less than in 2023, the total amount of insurance premiums collected increased by 9.8%, reaching over 5.7 billion hryvnias. Such data was published by the Motor (Transport) Insurance Bureau of Ukraine (MTIB).
The decrease in the number of contracts is explained by the fact that a significant part of Ukrainian drivers who are abroad for a long time are forced to register vehicles in accordance with local legislation. As a result, they use the services of foreign insurers instead of Ukrainian companies.
Despite this, the "Green Card" system remains a key insurance tool for Ukrainians traveling abroad. In 2024, the most popular insurance companies among drivers were "TAS", "Ukrainian Insurance Group", "Prince Vienna Insurance Group", "Guardian" and "PZU Ukraine". The largest amount of insurance premiums was collected by "TAS" (1.4 billion UAH), "Ukrainian Insurance Group" (797 million UAH) and "Prince Vienna Insurance Group" (618 million UAH).
Over the year, the number of claims for compensation for damages from road accidents involving Ukrainian drivers increased by 5.32% and reached 15,926 cases. Experts explain this growth by the increase in the duration of Ukrainian citizens' stay abroad due to the war. The largest number of settled claims falls on contracts concluded with the company "TAS" (3,191 cases), and the amount of compensation under them amounted to 10.5 million euros.
The total amount of insurance payments under all Green Card contracts concluded by Ukrainians amounted to 50.5 million euros, which is 8.42% more than in the previous year. Among the leading insurers, the following also stand out: Ukrainian Insurance Group (3,174 cases), Guardian (1,970 cases), PZU Ukraine (1,776 cases) and Princely Vienna Insurance Group (1,726 cases).
Significant changes are expected in the Green Card system in 2025. The main innovation will be the possibility of using the electronic format of the certificate in all member countries of the system, which will simplify the process of its registration. Ukrainian drivers are also required to register an insurance contract at least one day before departure to ensure timely entry of data into the Unified Database.
Recall that in order to travel abroad by car, Ukrainian drivers are required to have a valid Green Card certificate. At the same time, foreign local insurance does not allow you to cross the border to leave Ukraine, so timely registration of an international contract remains mandatory.
