Ukrainian farmers continue to play an important role in ensuring the food security of the country and the world. According to the Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy, as of March 13, 2025, farmers in 15 regions of Ukraine had sown more than 83 thousand hectares of spring grain and leguminous crops.
It is noted that spring sowing is actively gaining momentum. If at the beginning of March field work was carried out only in two southern regions - Mykolaiv and Odessa, then by March 13 another 13 regions of the country had joined them, which indicates an expansion of sowing volumes throughout the territory.
According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, at the moment the largest share of sown areas is allocated for barley - 45.2 thousand hectares. In addition, farmers have already started sowing other spring crops: wheat (12.9 thousand hectares), peas (17.8 thousand hectares) and oats (7.2 thousand hectares). These are important components for ensuring food security and stable production volumes in Ukraine.
The regions that are leading in terms of sowing rates are particularly highlighted. Thus, the leader among the regions was Ternopil region, where farmers sowed 15.2 thousand hectares, of which 12.5 thousand hectares are barley, and a large share is also occupied by peas and wheat crops. Volyn region sowed 11 thousand hectares, of which 5.5 thousand hectares are wheat, and Rivne and Vinnytsia regions are also actively involved in spring sowing.
As for Mykolaiv region, farmers here have already sown 10 thousand hectares. hectares, among which the largest share is peas, which are sown on 5.5 thousand hectares. Such figures indicate active preparation and expansion of areas for various crops.
In total, it is planned to sow more than 5.7 million hectares of spring grain and leguminous crops in 2025, which approximately corresponds to the level of 2024. It is predicted that the area under spring wheat will grow the most - by 28%, which will correspond to 222.8 thousand hectares. This is due to stable demand for wheat from processing enterprises and exporters, which increases the economic efficiency of this crop in the agricultural sector.
Thus, Ukraine continues to actively work to strengthen its positions as one of the largest suppliers of food to the world market, ensuring a stable level of production of spring grain and leguminous crops in the new agricultural season.
