According to analysts of the EastFruit project, onion prices on the Ukrainian market have undergone significant changes due to active harvesting by Ukrainian farmers and the peculiarities of product storage.

The analysts point out that onions are most often sold by those producers who do not have facilities for storing this vegetable. Other farmers have decided to refuse to sell at current prices and keep the entire volume of onions for further storage.

According to the daily monitoring of the project, Ukrainian farmers are currently offering onions for 7 to 12 UAH per kilogram, which is on average 21% cheaper than at the end of last week.

Experts attribute this decline in onion prices to an increase in the supply of low-quality products. Bad weather and rains during harvesting affected the quality of the crop, making much of it unsuitable for long-term storage. In this context, Ukrainian farmers are offering onions at reduced prices in an attempt to sell them on the market faster. At the same time, high quality onions are rarely available for sale as farmers prefer to store them in storage facilities and wait for prices to rise.

Today, onion prices in Ukraine are on average 60% lower than last year at the same time.

Analysts emphasize that the decline in onion prices may continue as the supply on the market continues to grow. In addition, onions have already begun to deteriorate in some storage facilities, and farmers may try to sell them later, in late fall.

It is worth noting that the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine predicts no sharp increase in vegetable prices this year, but seasonal fluctuations are possible.
