In 2025, new biomethane production facilities with a total capacity of 111 million cubic meters will begin operation in Ukraine. This step is part of a broader strategy for the development of bioenergy, which the government considers one of the key areas for ensuring the country's energy independence. This was announced by the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Vitaliy Koval during a roundtable organized by the State Agency for Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving.
According to the minister, the potential for biomethane production in Ukraine is almost 22 billion cubic meters per year. This is a colossal resource that, if properly developed, can significantly reduce Ukraine's dependence on imported energy sources and at the same time stimulate the development of the agricultural sector through the effective use of agricultural waste.
Koval emphasized that currently in Ukraine all the necessary conditions for launching the industry have been created: key legislation has been adopted, a biomethane register and a system of guarantees of its origin have been created. In addition, state investment incentive programs are in place - in particular, legislative initiatives that provide for support for projects worth over 12 million euros.
The minister paid special attention to digital tools in the bioenergy sector. He proposed using the State Agrarian Register as a platform for integrating market participants and automating the distribution of state support. This will allow achieving transparency, increasing the efficiency of using budget funds and accelerating the development of the sector.
“Biomethane is not just an alternative to traditional energy sources. It is a way to create products with high added value and at the same time effectively transforming agricultural waste into a strategic resource. For Ukraine, it is also a tool for real energy independence,” Koval emphasized.
In the context of modern challenges associated with geopolitical instability and climate risks, the development of bioenergy is of particular importance. According to experts, the active introduction of biomethane will not only strengthen Ukraine's energy security, but will also allow the agricultural sector to generate additional sources of income, increasing the economic sustainability of rural communities.
