At the beginning of October 2024, another shelling of the Ukrainian port infrastructure by Russia caused significant damage to the agricultural sector. According to information provided by Taras Vysotskyi, First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, the total amount of losses is between 30 and 40 million US dollars.
During a speech at "Ukraine Media Center", Vysotsky noted that the damage assessment is still ongoing, as the shelling does not stop. He added that the number could rise over time as more damage is discovered. Vysotsky emphasized that, despite the active hostilities, the Ukrainian side continues to carefully document all damages in order to demand compensation in accordance with international law.
The total losses of the agricultural sector since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine are currently estimated at approximately 82 billion dollars. In particular, the grain industry suffered losses in the amount of 500 to 600 million dollars. Despite all the difficulties, the government of Ukraine and international insurance companies actively support insurance against military risks, which is an important help for farmers in these extremely difficult conditions.
The process of documenting losses for farmers requires compliance with all legal requirements, which will allow Ukraine to fight for compensation from the aggressor in the future. "Every million losses, every thousand dollars will be recorded, because all these losses are the basis for future demands for compensation," Vysotskyi said.
Also, the Ukrainian side continues to cooperate with international partners to create a legal framework that will facilitate the compensation process. Efforts are aimed at restoring all damaged port infrastructure facilities and ensuring the return of lost funds, which is vital for Ukraine's agricultural sector.
Thus, the Ukrainian government, together with international organizations, is making efforts to overcome the consequences of aggression, implementing measures of insurance, legal support and documentation of losses, in order to restore the economy and protect the country's interests in the international arena.
