The first cogeneration gas-piston plant with a capacity of 1.5 MW began operating in Kyiv, installed at one of the critical infrastructure facilities. This project was implemented with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Energy Security Project, which help the capital of Ukraine to strengthen its energy sustainability.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said that modernization of the energy sector is one of the government's key tasks in the face of constant attacks from the enemy. He emphasized that in order to ensure the energy independence of Kyiv, the city government implements a number of measures aimed at increasing the stability of electricity and heat supply.
"The capital authorities are doing everything possible to increase the stability and energy independence of important objects of Kyiv," Klitschko said. He emphasized that thanks to international support, the capital is taking steps to form its own distributed energy system.
In May, the Kyiv City Council approved a new concept "Energy recovery: the path to distributed cogeneration". This document lays the foundation for the creation of local sources of combined heat and electricity production in Kyiv, as well as for expanding the use of alternative fuels. The initiative has received support from a number of international partners that are helping the capital in its energy reform efforts.
Vitaliy Klitschko also announced that Kyiv has ordered 15 more cogeneration plants, which will arrive in batches over the next year. This will make it possible to significantly strengthen the energy sustainability of the city and contribute to its gradual transition to distributed energy sources.
The overall goal of this program is to increase the capacity of such installations in Kyiv to approximately 170 MW within a year. Thus, the capital will be able to better face the challenges of the energy crisis and maintain stability in providing heat and electricity to critically important facilities.
