During the year, Kyiv suffered financial losses of UAH 2.4 billion due to public transport stops during air raids. This was reported by the Kyiv Passengers information portal.
It should be noted that a year ago, the Kyiv Defense Council decided to suspend the movement of public land transport and the subway during the activation of an air raid. The initiators of this step were Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko and Secretary of the Defense Council Mykola Zhirnov.
Experts estimate that during this period, transportation was stalled for about 274 hours, or almost 12 days. In addition, the Kyiv authorities ignored six petitions from local residents calling for the decision to be canceled.
It is noted that the effectiveness of the decision was justified by the recommendations of the State Emergency Service, but these recommendations themselves were not binding, but only advisory in nature.
Currently, public transport is stopped during air raids in Kyiv, Khmelnytsky, and Ivano-Frankivsk. Other cities have abandoned this decision due to its inefficiency and negative financial consequences.
"Stopping public transport during air raids in Kyiv has strategically harmful consequences for the city and its residents. A year ago, it was already obvious that Kyiv residents were not becoming more protected from such a decision, but were forced to pay extra for other types of transportation, thereby incurring significant costs," the representatives of the public initiative emphasize.
