Despite the war and security challenges, Ukrainian seaports continue to function actively: in April 2025, 6 million tons of cargo passed through them. More than half of the total volume traditionally fell on agricultural products — 3.1 million tons. Another million tons were accounted for by the transshipment of ore, which remains an important item of Ukrainian exports.
According to Ukrinform, the bulk of cargo — 5.3 million tons — was transported through the Ukrainian Sea Corridor, created to ensure uninterrupted logistics in wartime conditions. Of this volume, 2.9 million tons fell on agricultural products, which indicates the sustainable role of agriculture in the country's export potential.
The largest transshipment volumes in April were provided by the ports of Greater Odessa. In particular, the port of Pivdennyi processed 2.4 million tons of cargo, the port of Chornomorsk - 1.8 million tons, and the Odessa seaport - another 1 million tons. The ports of the Danube cluster (Izmail, Reni, Ust-Dunaysk) together provided the transshipment of another 800 thousand tons of cargo, which confirms their increasing importance in the logistics system of Ukraine.
Deputy Head of the Seaports Administration of Ukraine Vyacheslav Kharkavenko noted that maritime logistics continues to operate even in extremely difficult conditions. Among the main problems are the reduction of sown areas due to hostilities, mining of territories, temporary occupation of some regions and a significant decline in industrial production, in particular in metallurgy, where before the war 80% of production was exported.
Industry experts emphasize that spring is traditionally characterized by a seasonal decrease in agricultural exports, which usually increases in mid-summer. At the same time, Ukrainian ports are already demonstrating their ability to adapt to new conditions and ensure sustainable transshipment of key goods.
Despite the challenges, Ukraine continues to be a significant player in the global market for agricultural products and raw materials. The effective operation of seaports in difficult war conditions is critically important not only for the national economy, but also for world food security.
