Ukraine is once again facing a major challenge as it prepares for the approaching winter. According to a Reuters report, the state of the country's energy system leaves much to be desired, which could lead to nights without electricity, heating and water for millions of Ukrainians.

According to Reuters, thousands of engineers spent the summer months repairing war-damaged equipment, but budgetary constraints and circumstances have prevented full winterization efforts. Markus Lippold, the head of the European Union's energy team for enlargement, expressed doubt about Ukraine's ability to overcome the energy challenges this winter.

The report also cites the Kyiv School of Economics research center, which estimated direct losses to Ukraine's energy infrastructure at $8.8 billion as of June. The words of Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi about a possible blackout lasting up to two months also caused outrage and indignation.

The prolonged war and constant attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure have resulted in significant damage and reduced reliability. However, according to Dmytro Sakharuk, CEO of DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy company, their efforts are focused on recovery and winterization.

Despite the challenges and restrictions, Ukraine has accumulated enough gas to cover its own reserves during the winter. Improving the country's energy resilience also includes decentralization and imports of European electricity.

Ukraine now has a winter's worth of reserves, but the challenges remain significant. Ukrainians and the authorities should use all possible means to ensure safety and comfort during the cold season.
