Hungary has expressed its readiness to lift its veto on the approval of 50 billion euros of macro-financial assistance for Ukraine, but in exchange for this it demands the unfreezing of all EU money frozen for Hungary.

Budapest opposes a full four-year aid plan for Ukraine, preferring that the EU offer funding to Kyiv for one year without amending its budget. Balázs Orbán, the chief political adviser to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, said that if these conditions are met, Budapest will consider contributing to Ukraine's aid.

Hungary is trying to maximize the benefits of the €10 billion in EU funds likely to be frozen this week. The EU Executive Committee has already approved the allocation of €900 million to the country from the frozen EU Recovery Fund to override Budapest's veto on aid to Ukraine.

However, Orban has expressed his desire to receive the entire frozen amount, about €30 billion, which was frozen last year due to problems with the rule of law and corruption.

Hungary had previously used a de facto veto on the EU's decision to provide Ukraine with 50 billion euros in economic aid until 2027 and to start negotiations on joining the EU.
